Neutral by Design: The Engineered Rhetoric of Scientific Prose
There is a sentence structure that announces, with quiet authority, that what follows is not an opinion. The experiment was conducted. The results were observed. The conclusion is supported by the data. The agent—the person who conducted, observed, and concluded—has been grammatically excised from the record. What remains is a proposition that appears to have generated itself, emerging from nature rather than from a particular mind, in a particular laboratory, shaped by particular assumptions. This is the rhetoric of scientific objectivity, and its most remarkable feature is how thoroughly it has disguised itself as the absence of rhetoric altogether.
The history of scientific prose is not a story of language gradually clearing itself of distortion until pure fact could shine through. It is, instead, a story of deliberate construction: of style guides, editorial mandates, institutional pressures, and philosophical commitments that coalesced, over several centuries, into a set of conventions so thoroughly naturalized that to violate them is to risk being read as unscientific. Understanding how those conventions were built—and what they were built to accomplish—is one of the more revealing projects available to historians and philosophers of science.
The Grammar of Disembodiment
The passive voice is the most visible instrument in scientific writing's rhetorical toolkit, and its rise to dominance was neither inevitable nor innocent. Early modern natural philosophers wrote in a register that was frankly personal. Robert Boyle's accounts of his air-pump experiments in the seventeenth century were written in a style that modern journal editors would reject outright: they were discursive, anecdotal, and saturated with the first person. Boyle described what he saw, what he suspected, what he found persuasive. The voice was transparent about its own situatedness.
Over the following two centuries, that transparency was systematically retired. By the mid-nineteenth century, the norms of British scientific societies were pushing authors toward an increasingly impersonal register. By the twentieth century, the American scientific establishment—through journals, graduate training programs, and the conventions of grant writing—had essentially standardized the passive construction as the default mode of scientific communication. The rationale offered was epistemological: removing the author from the sentence removed the appearance of bias, producing a text that seemed to report on the world rather than to interpret it.
What this rationale obscured was the degree to which the passive voice is itself an interpretive act. To write that 'the data suggest' rather than 'I interpret the data to suggest' is not to eliminate interpretation; it is to relocate interpretive authority from a named individual to an abstraction. The data do not, in any straightforward sense, suggest anything. A scientist suggests, on the basis of data, and the passive construction hides that mediation behind a grammatical sleight of hand.
Mathematical Abstraction as Epistemic Credential
If the passive voice performs disembodiment at the level of grammar, mathematical formalism performs it at the level of argument. The substitution of equations for prose claims has a long philosophical history, rooted in the Galilean conviction that the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics. But the deployment of mathematical notation in scientific writing serves rhetorical functions that exceed its purely logical ones.
An equation carries an implicit claim to precision that prose cannot easily replicate. It also carries a claim to universality: a mathematical relationship, unlike a verbal description, appears to transcend the particular circumstances in which it was derived. When a scientific argument is expressed in formal notation, it acquires the appearance of having been deduced rather than persuaded—of belonging to the domain of proof rather than the domain of rhetoric. This appearance is, in many cases, well earned. But it is not automatic. The selection of variables, the choice of model, the decision about which quantities to treat as negligible—these are judgment calls that mathematics records without advertising.
The sociologist of science Harry Collins spent decades documenting what he called 'tacit knowledge': the embodied expertise that scientists carry but cannot fully articulate in published form. The formalized, mathematized scientific paper is precisely the medium that strips tacit knowledge away, producing a text that seems self-sufficient but actually presupposes a community of trained readers who supply what the text omits. The objectivity performed by mathematical abstraction is, in this sense, a collective fiction sustained by a community of insiders.
Who Gets Erased, and Who Disappears Willingly
The epistemological consequences of scientific prose conventions are not distributed evenly. The grammatical erasure of the author from the scientific text has historically had different implications depending on who the author was. For researchers whose authority was already presumed—those affiliated with elite institutions, working within established paradigms, publishing in high-status venues—the conventions of impersonal prose reinforced existing credibility. The text's apparent neutrality lent weight to conclusions that the author's institutional position had already primed readers to accept.
For researchers operating from the margins of the scientific establishment—women, scientists of color, scholars working outside the major research universities—the same conventions functioned differently. Their work was subjected to greater scrutiny for methodological deviation, and their departures from conventional prose were more likely to be read as evidence of subjectivity or inadequate training. The 'view from nowhere' that scientific prose performed was, in practice, a view from somewhere quite specific: from the well-funded laboratory, the credentialed institution, the demographic majority of the mid-twentieth-century American research establishment.
This is not merely a sociological observation. It is a philosophical one. If the rhetorical conventions of scientific writing systematically advantage certain knowledge-makers while rendering others invisible, then those conventions are not epistemically neutral instruments. They are mechanisms through which power and credibility are allocated under the cover of procedural objectivity.
The Fiction and Its Uses
None of this is to say that the conventions of scientific prose are simply fraudulent, or that the aspiration to objectivity is merely a mask for ideology. The project of minimizing the intrusion of individual bias into empirical reporting is a genuine and valuable one, and the stylistic norms developed to serve that project have, in many contexts, served it well. The question is whether those norms have been adequately examined, or whether they have been permitted to accumulate a kind of philosophical immunity by virtue of their association with the prestige of science itself.
The philosopher Thomas Nagel famously described objectivity as 'the view from nowhere'—an aspiration toward a perspective that transcends the particular standpoint of any individual knower. Nagel was careful to note that this was an aspiration, not an achievement. The conventions of scientific prose, however, have often been treated as though they transform aspiration into fact: as though writing in the passive voice, deploying mathematical notation, and suppressing the first person actually produces the view from nowhere rather than merely gesturing toward it.
The history of science offers ample evidence that the gesture can be powerful regardless of whether the achievement is real. Scientific prose has been extraordinarily productive precisely because its rhetorical conventions generate a kind of trust—a provisional willingness to treat the text's claims as though they had been generated by no one in particular, which is to say, by everyone in general. That trust is not irrational. But it is not epistemologically innocent either.
Recognizing scientific language as rhetoric is not an act of debunking. It is an act of philosophical honesty—a willingness to examine the machinery of knowledge-making rather than simply to operate it. The conventions of scientific prose were engineered. Understanding how, and why, and to whose benefit, is among the more important tasks that the history and philosophy of science can perform.
