Words That Carry a Philosophy

Language is never merely descriptive. This observation, familiar to philosophers of language and historians of science alike, takes on particular significance when applied to the vocabulary through which scientific communities narrate their own development. The terms that populate scientific press releases, grant applications, and introductory textbooks—words like breakthrough, cutting-edge, revolutionary, state-of-the-art, and paradigm shift—are not neutral descriptors of observed change. They are philosophical commitments disguised as adjectives. They encode a specific theory of how science moves through time: forward, cumulatively, and irreversibly, shedding error as it advances toward a horizon of ever-greater truth.

This narrative is seductive, institutionally convenient, and historically misleading. It is also, as this article argues, consequential for the actual conduct of scientific inquiry—shaping which questions researchers ask, which historical precedents they consult, and which abandoned paths they are intellectually permitted to revisit.

The Archaeology of Scientific Forgetting

The history of science is not a record of smooth forward motion. It is densely populated with research programs that were pursued seriously, funded generously, and then abandoned—not always because they were demonstrated to be wrong, but because funding priorities shifted, key investigators died or moved on, or adjacent technological developments made them temporarily less tractable. The history of American science in the twentieth century alone includes extensive programs in analogue computing that were foreclosed by the digital turn before their potential was fully explored, nutritional research paradigms centered on fat metabolism that were displaced by the sugar-industry-funded emphasis on dietary fat, and ecological frameworks centered on climax community theory that were abandoned before their predictive limits were fully characterized.

None of these abandoned programs is celebrated in the vocabulary of scientific progress. The words that might describe them—superseded, obsolete, disproven—carry a finality that forecloses reconsideration. A research direction described as superseded is not merely old; it is epistemologically closed, placed on the wrong side of a developmental threshold that the rhetoric of progress renders permanent. The effect is to transform what are often contingent historical outcomes—the product of funding decisions, institutional politics, and technological accidents—into the appearance of epistemic verdicts.

Historian of science Hasok Chang has documented this phenomenon with particular clarity in his work on the history of temperature measurement, showing how the displacement of phlogiston theory and caloric fluid models closed off research questions that, had they remained open, might have generated productive insights. His concept of the complementary science—the systematic recovery of epistemically valuable content in abandoned frameworks—depends precisely on resisting the vocabulary of obsolescence that makes such recovery seem retrograde.

Kuhn's Unintended Legacy

It is one of the minor ironies of intellectual history that Thomas Kuhn, whose Structure of Scientific Revolutions was intended in part as a critique of triumphalist narratives of scientific progress, inadvertently furnished the vocabulary through which those narratives are most vigorously perpetuated. The term paradigm shift, extracted from its theoretical context and deployed in popular and institutional discourse, has become perhaps the single most powerful instrument of scientific self-congratulation in the American cultural lexicon.

In Kuhn's original framework, paradigm shifts were traumatic, discontinuous, and often irrational events—episodes in which entire communities of practice abandoned one framework for another through a process that could not be fully rationalized by appeal to evidence alone. The concept was designed to complicate the image of science as a smoothly progressive enterprise. In its popular usage, the term has been inverted: a paradigm shift now denotes not a crisis but a triumph, not a rupture but an achievement. It is deployed to celebrate new technologies, new methodologies, and new research directions as evidence of science's extraordinary capacity for self-renewal.

The philosophical cost of this inversion is considerable. It transforms Kuhn's most unsettling insight—that scientific change involves genuine loss, genuine incommensurability, and genuine contingency—into a celebration of forward motion that erases exactly those features of scientific history that Kuhn found most philosophically significant.

Path Dependency and the Foreclosure of Questions

The concept of path dependency, developed in economic history to describe how early technological choices constrain subsequent options even after the original rationale for those choices has disappeared, translates with uncomfortable precision to the domain of scientific vocabulary. The language that a scientific community inherits shapes what its members find thinkable—not through explicit prohibition but through the distribution of prestige, the structure of research funding, and the editorial preferences of high-impact journals.

A researcher who proposes to revisit a question categorized as settled or superseded faces institutional headwinds that are partly rhetorical in origin. Grant reviewers trained to value novelty are predisposed to regard historical reconsideration as regressive rather than generative. Journal editors whose prestige depends on publishing cutting-edge findings have structural incentives to decline work that explicitly engages with abandoned frameworks. The vocabulary of progress does not merely describe a direction of travel; it enforces it.

This matters most at the edges of disciplinary knowledge, where the questions that cannot be asked are often the ones most worth pursuing. The history of science offers numerous examples of productive rediscoveries—moments when researchers returned to abandoned instruments, forgotten experimental traditions, or displaced theoretical frameworks and found in them resources that contemporary science had overlooked. The germ theory of disease drew on ideas that had been circulating, without institutional traction, for decades before Pasteur and Koch gave them experimental form. The resurgence of interest in epigenetic inheritance mechanisms has required researchers to rehabilitate frameworks dismissed as neo-Lamarckian—a label that, for most of the twentieth century, functioned as a professional disqualification rather than a technical description.

Toward a More Honest Lexicon

The argument here is not that scientific progress is illusory or that abandoned frameworks are generally worth recovering. It is the narrower and more defensible claim that the vocabulary through which science narrates its development systematically overstates the finality of past decisions and understates the contingency of present ones. A more epistemologically honest scientific vocabulary would distinguish between questions that have been answered and questions that have merely been set aside, between frameworks that have been refuted and frameworks that have been defunded, between technologies that have been superseded and technologies whose potential has been incompletely explored.

Such a vocabulary would be less rhetorically satisfying and less useful for institutional self-promotion. It would also be more truthful about the nature of scientific knowledge—not as an accumulating archive of permanent discoveries but as a living, revisable, and historically situated practice whose relationship to the past is more complicated than the grammar of progress allows.
